Witch World
The Witch World is a planet in a parallel universe where magic works. The magic operates according to consistent rules which often drive the plot, so you won't find characters suddenly acquiring new powers simply because the author finds it convenient. Fantasy fans in general should read this collection. It's a nice introduction to the work of one of the greatest writers in the genre.

Frankenstein
This classic horror story raises serious questions about the nature of creation, while reflecting on mankind’s own irrepressible urge to self-destruct. Dr Vicktor Frankenstein creates a being that first hungers for acceptance, then seeks to kill those whom his creator loves most. Viktor not only loses his wife and best friend, he eventually loses his mind and soul. A cautionary tale that is all the more relevant in these times of dubious scientific ethics.

Tony Shillitoe
Andrakis / Ashuak
The Andrakis trilogy is an epic saga of the efforts of A Ahmud Ki to gather magical power to ultimately become a Dragonlord. His quest for power is threatened by the fulfilment of an ancient prophecy that the bearer of Abreotan's sword - Dylan of the Vale - will destroy the Dragonlords.
The Ashuak Chronicles follow the fortunes of three characters - Sukaal Vekesh, Alwyn and Shana - caught in the battle of the Jaru people for freedom from Ashuak oppression. As the humans struggle in their own wars, a more sinister menace - the Dragonkin - plan to eliminate humanity.
Dreaming in Amber is a 4-book series that follows the fortunes of Meg Farmer and others fated to oppose the plans of the Seers to release the Demon Horsemen onto humanity in an attempt to create paradise on earth. This series draws together events, worlds and characters from the Ashuak and Andrakis collections to complete a sprawling saga across 2,000 years of history.

Dan Simmons
The Hyperion Cantos
On the eve of an intergalactic war between humans and meta-humans, seven strangers are summoned for an audience with the mysterious Shrike – part deity, part killing machine. The fate of the universe rests upon these strangers as each of them fulfils their individual destinies. Simmons references classical literature and combines genres to examine the relationship between religion, science and humans in a very accessible way. When this series was written in the 90s, it set the benchmark for science fiction and remains one of the most acclaimed series of the genre.
Illium / Olympos
In the far future, Mars has been mysteriously occupied by a group of meta-humans who have taken the guise of ancient Greek gods. When their attempts to re-enact the Trojan War threatens the structural stability of the universe, robots from Jupiter (including a pair of robots that love Proust and Shakespeare) are sent to rectify the situation, hopefully without using the planet-busting bomb they have in their hands. Classical texts - Homer’s Iliad and Shakespeare’s The Tempest - are cleverly intertwined into the narrative, creating a stunning world full of wonder and adventure. A unique and engrossing series.

Cryptonomicon
This novel seems to be about Everything, or at the very least, the use of symbol systems and decryption to discover the true nature of Everything. With shades of Gravity’s Rainbow and a keen eye for popular culture, the author blends historical reality and fictional invention to create a work of literature that sheds much light on our cultural present.

Set during the Enlightenment, this deeply interesting trilogy is a prequel to the events of Cryptonomicon.

The Sea of Time
The premise of this trilogy is that Nantucket Island has been tossed back to about 1400 BC, with the Coast Guard tall ship Eagle in tow just offshore. From this point, a new and different timeline commences, one complicated by outbreaks of disease, the inhabitants' shrewdness and stark treason on the part of one of the time-displaced band. Strong characterisation, good historical scholarship, superior narrative technique, excellent battle scenes and an awareness of social, economic and technological factors.

War of the Worlds
Possibly the most famous science fiction novel ever, and recently made into a blockbuster film starring Tom Cruise. This story of alien invasion has thrilled and chilled audiences since its release in 1898 and raises questions still pertinent today – politics, mortality, man’s place in the universe, the threat of technological advances, and so much more.
The Time Machine
The author’s first novel, this is both science fiction and social parable. Through the experiences of the Time Traveller, we see the future, which is not a rosy place as depicted in Star Trek and the like. Posing questions of morality, social equality and good vs evil, it’s a very thought-provoking read.
