This is a terrifying journey into the dark heart of white ultra-nationalism. Nick Ryan's many undercover operations took him into the lairs (and minds) of those who espouse the violent removal of all but the white Anglo-Saxon race: English football yobs, fanatical paramilitaries and the shaven-headed denizens of the white power music industry. As in George Orwell's similar journeys into a world that few of us see, this investigation of the outer fringes of bigotry is both edifying and frightening. There are moments that have the power of the most gripping thrillers, such as Ryan's precarious cover being broken in North Carolina by the thuggish followers of a neo-Nazi zealot. The canvas here is truly international in scope: from the racist pubs of south London, through fanatical right-wing cells in Europe and the United States, and deep into the heart of Nordic terrorist groups, Ryan beards these fearsome individuals in their dens, always at the risk of exposure, violence and even death. There are moments that leap off the page, but the tone is always dispassionate. As the West worries about the religious fanaticism of Al-Qaeda, Nick Ryan demonstrates that murderous extremism is not confined to the more intolerant religious groups. As a piece of investigative journalism, this is both sweeping and disturbing. (Kirkus UK)
