Tom Holt is the author of such comic fantasy classics as: Expecting Someone Taller, Who's Afraid of Beowulf?, Flying Dutch, Ye Gods!, Overtime, Here Comes the Sun, Grailblazers, Faust Among Equals, Odds and Gods, Djinn Rummy, My Hero, Paint Your Dragon and Open Sesame
The Portable Door, from prolific author Tom Holt, is the ultimate in comic fantasy. When Paul Carpenter reluctantly manages to get a job at J.W. Wells & Co he's sure he's in for a boring grind; it is only his new colleague, the thin girl, who keeps his interest alive. However, the company isn't what it seems and there are some bizarre happenings. Paul discovers unexpected dowsing talents and is inclined to turn a blind eye to chunks gouged out of the office door and the giant stapler that comes and goes as it pleases. When it seems that his bosses can read his mind, and items start appearing and disappearing, he knows there's magic afoot. Reminiscent of JB Priestley's The Image Men, and just as fantastical, Tom Holt's easy, good-humoured style is beguilingly entertaining. Another diverting gem in the genre. (Kirkus UK)
