Starting a new job is always stressful (especially when you don't particularly want one), but when Paul Carpenter arrives at the office of J. W. Wells he has no idea what trouble lies in store. Because he is about to discover that the apparently respectable establishment now paying his salary is in fact a front for a deeply sinister organisation that has a mighty peculiar agenda. It seems that half the time his bosses are away with the fairies. But they're not, of course.

They're away with the goblins.

Mister Tom Holt, Master of the Comic Fantasy Novel, cordially invites you to join him in his world of madness by reading his next hilarious masterpiece.

Reviews for Portable Door

The Portable Door, from prolific author Tom Holt, is the ultimate in comic fantasy. When Paul Carpenter reluctantly manages to get a job at J.W. Wells & Co he's sure he's in for a boring grind; it is only his new colleague, the thin girl, who keeps his interest alive. However, the company isn't what it seems and there are some bizarre happenings. Paul discovers unexpected dowsing talents and is inclined to turn a blind eye to chunks gouged out of the office door and the giant stapler that comes and goes as it pleases. When it seems that his bosses can read his mind, and items start appearing and disappearing, he knows there's magic afoot. Reminiscent of JB Priestley's The Image Men, and just as fantastical, Tom Holt's easy, good-humoured style is beguilingly entertaining. Another diverting gem in the genre. (Kirkus UK)
